Raising hens for their eggs was our first farm-animal project.

Large, commercial- egg farms feed their hens a formula ration. Our hens are allowed to wander freely and choose their own foods. (We supplement them with organiic feed in winter.)

A free range diet makes the eggs rich in omega-3s, which the hens produce from purslane and other greens. Their diets makes their egg yolks bright yellow-orange, too.

We keep a variety of breeds of hens. The breed determines the egg shell's color. But the hen lays eggs in her own unique shade. Here is a picture of their eggs. Move your mouse over an egg to learn which breed lays it.
